If you’re looking to explore Singapore like a local, then look no further!

In this blog post, we’ll teach you how to use the city’s rail, metro, bus, and taxi systems. Rail is a great way to get around the city quickly and easily.

The metro is perfect for long trips or for getting to areas that are not serviced by rail. Bus transportation is great for traveling between neighborhoods, while taxi cabs are perfect for shorter trips or when you need to get somewhere in a hurry.

With so many transportation options available in Singapore, there’s no excuse not to see everything this amazing city has to offer!

1. Explore through Rail/Train

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) system in Singapore is most likely the quickest way to go about the city. Our trains are a terrific way to get around because the majority of our well-known sights are only a short stroll from an MRT station.

The MRT travels underground in the central city before rising above ground and heading toward the suburban housing developments. It has six colored lines: the Thomson-East Coast Line, the Circle Line, the North-South, the North-East, the East-West, the Downtown, and the East-West. The latter started operating its first three stations in 2020 and six more by the middle of 2021.

A final part leading through to Changi Airport is expected to be finished by 2040, and a third stage connecting Caldecott with Marina Bay is set to open in 2022.

2. Explore through Bus

The large bus system in Singapore covers nearly the entire island and is clean, effective, and reliable. SBS Transit and SMRT are the two primary companies, and they both accept EZ-Link cards. Cash payments are also accepted, however you must have the correct fare because no change is given. Their websites and the ‘SG Buses’ app, which displays real-time bus arrivals, both have routes and timetables.

On Fridays, Saturdays, and the eve of public holidays, the train operator SMRT also offers late-night bus services between the city and a number of suburbs from 11.30pm to 4.35am.

3. Explore through Trishaw

Trishaw Uncle, the only authorized trishaw tour provider in the city-state, offers novelty trips around some of the most atmospheric neighborhoods in Singapore using its depleting fleet of trishaws, which were once a common mode of transportation in the Little Red Dot.

These days, independent trishaw drivers are hard to come by; hunt for them in popular tourist areas like Chinatown and around Raffles Singapore.

4. Explore through Taxi or Ride Share

Metered taxis and ridesharing services can get you where you need to go fast or after business hours, or if you’re going to one of the few areas of Singapore that aren’t covered by the city’s public transportation system.

By Singaporean standards, cabs in Singapore are hygienic, air-conditioned, and reasonably priced. Additionally, they are going greener; keep an eye out for the 2021-released fleet of neon-green electric Strides Taxi cabs.

In Singapore, there are many taxis, however they are much more expensive. To hail a cab, look for a clearly marked taxi line stand, or use their smartphone app or phone number to request a pick-up from your location.

5. Explore through Bicycle

Cycling in constantly hot and humid Singapore may be tough work, but that hasn’t stopped the Land Transport Authority from trying to increase the country’s 460km (286 miles) of bike lanes by 2030.

The 186-mile (300-kilometer) Park Connector Network of trails connecting Singapore’s parks and the designated mountain biking sites at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Tampines, and Pulau Ubin are among the city-top state’s attractions.

6. Explore through Boat

For the 15-minute ride to Pulau Ubin, a tranquil island getaway, you’ll need to board a bumboat (motorized sampan) from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, close to the airport. Be prepared to wait since boats don’t leave until they are full (typically 12 people).

Four of Singapore’s Southern Islands are also accessible by public ferry, with services departing from the Marina South Pier towards St. John’s Island, Lazarus Island, Kusu Island, and Sisters’ Island. Tickets for island hopping are available.
