1) Kindle Paperwhite

Key FeatureEasy on the eyes
Where to Buyhttps://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-Paperwhite-8GB-6.8-inch-display/dp/B08N3J8GTX
Price$199.00

There isn’t much of a difference between the Kindle Paperwhite and its closest competitor, the Kobo Clara HD. The 6-inch, 300ppi display and bright backlight make it appealing. The tablets are priced similarly, with 8GB storage on both and a 6-inch, 300ppi screen and brightbacklight. The Paperwhite’s waterproof body and flushed screen, on the other hand, put it in front of the Clara HD, which is more vulnerable to splashes and has a recessed display.

Key Differentiators:

  • Waterproof reading
  • Easy on the eyes
  • Purpose-built for reading

Customer’s Review:

LOVE this bad boy! Genuinely looks like paper, the size and weight is excellent, USB C charging finally and a screen that feels closer to the size of a typical paperback. Response time is great and better than anticipated after watching some videos of older paperwhite models online. Highly recommended, perfect all rounder and I love reading on it.

2) Kobo Nia

Key FeatureGlare-free 6″ touchscreen
Where to Buyhttps://au.kobobooks.com/products/kobo-nia
Price$149.95

If cost is your main concern, the Kobo Nia is the best option. The Amazon Kindle Store, while seemingly comprehensive, is the only way to get books on a Kindle. You can buy ebooks from the Kobo Store, third-party retailers like Booktopia and Dymocks, as well as borrow ebooks from your local library with the Kobo Nia.

Key Differentiators:

  • 8GB of storage,
  • Glare-free 6″ touchscreen
  • Built-in public library borrowing

Customer’s Review:

Easy to use, can be used outside which is not true of my ipad and also in poor light. It is easy to download library books which gives access to thousands of books at no cost. Wouldn’t be without it.

3) Kindle Oasis

Key FeatureAdjustable warm light
Where to Buyhttps://www.amazon.com.au/All-new-Kindle-Oasis-now-with-adjustable-warm-light-8GB/dp/B07L5GDTYY
Price$399.00

The Kindle Oasis is one of the most expensive Kindles on the market, coming in at $399. However, you get a stunningly designed aluminum body and the most features available on any Kindle model to date for your money. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A is a 7-inch, 300ppi tablet with page-turn buttons for simple one-handed reading. It has a nice appearance and is quite relaxing to use. It has a dimmer and an adjustable warm light for a more pleasurable reading experience in any lighting.

Key Differentiators:

  • Adjustable warm light
  • Thin and light ergonomic design
  • Instant access to millions of books

Customer’s Review:

The large 7” screen is very crisp, and the ability to control warmth is amazingly good. This really makes a difference on the contrast and subjectively feels easier on the eyes. It looks even more like paper than I imagined. The uniformity of illumination is excellent too – you cannot see any brightness variation across the entire display. Superb.

4) Kobo Libra H2O

Key FeatureAdjustable brightness and colour temperature
Where to Buyhttps://au.kobobooks.com/products/kobo-libra-h2o
Price$269.95

The 7-inch, 300ppi screen has it all with this monster. It’s waterproof, has page-turn buttons, adjustable warm light, and a pleasant design. It’s large enough to read almost any book, especially graphic novels. Even better, the Kobo Libra H2O makes a reasonable case for being called ‘mid-range,’ given its reasonable $269.95 price tag and premium features.

Key Differentiators:

  • Adjustable brightness and colour temperature
  • 12 different fonts and over 50 font styles
  • Easy-to-use page-turn buttons

Customer’s Review:

This Kobo helps me read more! The size is perfect and I like that it is water-resistant. My favourite part of Kobo is how it integrates with the Overdrive system and the Pocket app.

5) Kobo Clara HD

Key Feature6″ HD E Ink touchscreen
Where to Buyhttps://au.kobobooks.com/products/kobo-clara-hd
Price$189.95

You’ll be satisfied with either the Paperwhite or the Kobo Clara HD in this price range. If you’re wondering which light to choose, it all boils down to personal preference: waterproofing or warm lighting. Though the Clara HD isn’t waterproof, it does have warm light, so there’ll be less eyestrain than with the basic white light offered on the Paperwhite for avid nighttime readers. The fact that it’s compatible with any .epub file, which are far more common than Kindle’s proprietary ebook files, is also a significant selling point.

Key Differentiators:

  • 6″ HD E Ink touchscreen
  • 6″ glare-free high-definition 300 PPI screen
  • ComfortLight PRO

Customer’s Review:

Perfect lighting on this reader. Have used Kobo for years, so grateful for an alternative to Amazon. Love the Clara’s size, function, and features. The sleep cover works perfectly.

6) Amazon Kindle 10th Generation

Key FeaturePurpose-built for reading
Where to Buyhttps://www.amazon.com.au/Kindle-now-built-front-light/dp/B07FQ4XCR1
Price$109.00

The all-new Amazon Kindle 10th Generation features a built-in adjustable front light, so you can read at night and during the day—and more frequently than ever before. Kindle is a dedicated reader that has a glare-free touchscreen display that looks and feels like genuine paper, even in bright sunlight. These form-fitting covers are designed by Amazon to fit your Kindle perfectly and securely attach while folding back for one-handed reading.

Key Differentiators:

  • Read distraction-free
  • Adjustable front light
  • Purpose-built for reading

Customer’s Review:

This Kindle was bought because my original one died after 8 years. This one is very light and more compact than the previous one. It’s easy to get started by following the on screen prompts. It’s touch screen, which I didn’t know and accidentally found out, when I pressed the on button. It operates like a laptop and so is very easy to navigate.

I was very happy to see all my previous books automatically moved to my new Kindle. The user guide, like the previous one, is downloaded for your information. A wonderful reading tool. Highly recommended.
